Hiking in Tunisia

Day 1: Djerba Island – Douz

When you arrive at Djerba Airport we will be waiting to pick you up, and transfer you to your hotel in Douz. Douz is a town in the south of Tunisia, known as the gateway to the Sahara The town is located about 475 kilometres south of the Tunisian capital of Tunis. After a briefing you are free to visit the serounding areas. There is Palmeraie around Douz, and this the largest in Tunisia, with almost half a million palm trees. The palm forest is a very interesting place to visit, and it produces also a assortment of fruit, vegetables and dates.

Day 2 untill 6: Hiking in the Sahara desert

Afther a good breakfast you will meet the team (guide, camel trainer, cook) which is going to lead your trip between the Great Oriental Erg sand dunes during a few days. Our starting point will be Douz, and we will hike to Limezil, Bir El Hadj, Erg Zmilet, Heguif Elboum and ends in Ksar Ghilane, a beautiful Saharan oasis.

Day 7: Ksar Ghilane oasis – Djerba Island – Houmt souk

The hike ends with your arrival at Ksar Ghilane in the late morning. This oasis has a hot springs feed a small swimming hole shaded by graceful tamarisk trees.

Today our first stop will be the old Roman Fort of Tisavar. Ksar Ghilane marks the southern limit of the Roman Empire. The Romans liked their luxuries and a posting to the fort must have seemed like such a depressing prospect until soldiers descovered that the nearby oasis of Ghilane has thermal ponds. Ksar Ghilane is located about 2 km east. You can enjoy the warm water spring just like the Romas. After lunch you will return to your hotel on Djerba island by car.

Day 8: Departure from Djerba island – Home

Untill departure time you can explore Houmt Souk, the capital of Djerb Island.
Transfer from your hotel to Djerba-Zarzis airport.
