Thubuno Majus

Thuburbo Majus is a large ancient Roman settlement in northern Tunisia, located about 50km southwest of Carthage on a major African thoroughfare. This thoroughfare connects Carthage with the Sahara. Originally this was a Punic town, that later fell under control of the Romans. During the Roma control it reached the top of its prosperity, housing more than 10.000 inhabitants. The interesting objects on this site include two capitols with four big pillars dedicated to Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus. The ruins of an original Byzantine olive press. A nice temple dedicated to the god of trade Mercury. The summer and winter baths with an impressive entrance. The impressive sport complex Portico of the Petroni were some of the surrounding columns are still standing, and a massive cistern who supplied the town of water.
