Sfax

Sfax is the second largest city in Tunisia, located 270 km southeast of Tunis. Itbis a coastal town with about 450.000 inhabitants. The Phoenicians were the first to develop Sfax and the coast line, but it was until the Arabs took it over in the 8th century when the city had a good prosperity. There are some interesting places for tourists to see such as Kasbah dates back to the 12th century, but most of its was built in the 17th century. A former upper class mansion now turned into a museum that is called Dar Jellouli. The medina has an impressive entrance, the triple arch Bab Diwan. This gate is dating back to 1306. The great mosque with a minaret dating back from 988AD. The ville nouvelle has some very interesting colonial buildings mixed in apartments, shops, and government buildings.
