Monastir

The city of Monastir is located on the central coast of Tunisia, 20 km south of Sousse and 162 km south of Tunis. The city was founded by the Phoenician, and later it became a Roman stronghold. Even Julius Caesar based himself in this town before the battle of Thapsus. The city features a great example of Islamic military architecture named the Ribat complex. The Ribat was used to scan the sea for hostile ships as a defence against the attacks of the Byzantines. The Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba is the cemetery of Habib Bourguiba, the first president of Tunisa. Although he never was elected by the people in free elections, he is generally considered as the father of the modern nation.
