Le Kef

The city of Le Kef is a city in north western Tunisia, and it’s one of the highest cities of Tunisia, at 780 metres high, and is offering stunning panoramic views. The city is only km from the Algerian border, and 175 km from Tunis. The city has a long history of several ethnic groups controlling the city. Carthage established Le Kef around 500 BC, and then the Romans, Numidias, Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Jewish, and Ottomans all played a role in the history of the town leaving their footsteps. For a small town as Le Kef it has some very interesting attraction for visitors starting with the Musee des Arts et Traditions Populaires that is located in Sufi complex dated from 1749, and with displaying some very interesting monuments such as a tomb from Sidi Ben Aissa the Sufi leader. There are some interesting silver jewellery, and items from the Berber culture such as a traditional Berber Nomads tents. Sidi Boumakhlouf an old and beautiful mosque that was used by the Sidi. It was built in the 17th century. Le Kef itself is a charming town and great to strolled around and to enjoy the architecture. The Kasbah of Le Kef was a military fortress dating back to 1600. From the fortress you have a stunning view of the old town, and the fields beyond. Al Ghriba Synagogue is located in the heart of the former Jewesh quarter. The Synagogue is restored in 1994, and is definitely worth a visit.

If you want to enjoy a bath in stunning natural setting, you must visit the amazing Roman bath’s of Hammam Mellegue, 15 km west of Le Kef. It consists of two rooms, one for men and the other for women and encloses a spring of relaxing hot water of about 35°C stemming out from the ground at the pool.
