Kasserine

In February 1943 near the city of Kasserine was the site of first WWII’s confrontations between American and German ground forces. Marshal Erwin Rommel from the German Afrika Korps tried to block the advance of the Allied forces commanded by general Lloyd Fredendall. At the first attack the Allied forces lost heavily, but they were reinforced by British reserves, and that had more effect. Other British forces advanced from Libya, and eventually setting the stage for the fall of Tunis.

Kasserine is situated in western-central part of the country, east of the Chambi Mountain, Tunisia’s largest at 1554 metres, in the Aurès Mountains. The Aurès Mountains are also located in Algeria, and are about 400 km long and up to 90 km at its widest. Kasserine was called in the roman times Cillium, and the ruins are spread over a wide area. The main sights are the triumphal arch. The Mausoleum that is in really good condition, and market as the best one in Tunisia. The theatre that has a stunning location, because is carved into a hillside, built in the 3th century.
