El Haouaria

El Haouaria is on the northernmost tip of Cap Bon located under the Sidi Abioud Mountain. It is a fairly sleepy coastal village of around 9,000 residents with a very remote air about it. Near the city there are unspoilt beaches of Ras el Drek on the southern side, and some impressive cliffs. The Roman named El Haouaria ā€˜ā€™ Aqualariaā€™ā€™ which means ā€œcountry of eaglesā€. The coastal caves, 4 km northwest where cut into stones parts by the Phoenicians, who build Kerkouana, Carthage, and El Jem with it. The area is a popular resting place for migrating birds and the rugged rocky coastline is ideal for the breeding of falcons. There is also a three-day falconry festival is held in the Nadi el Bayazara Falconry Centre in El Haouaria.

The main sights in the area are: Jebel Aboid who has a peak of 390m, and on top you have an amazing bird watching spot, view of the sheer cliffs, and a stark blue sea. Of course the complex of the caves that stretches for almost 1 km along the coast is truly impressive. Ras El Drek is a lovely and romantic with sand beach, backed by nice villas.
