El Ghriba

The oldest synagogue of North Africa is El Ghriba Synagogue, and it’s located in the Jewish village of Hara Seghira, several kilometres southwest of Houmt Souk. Many pilgrims come here during Lag BaOmer, when the Jews come to pay their tribute to the grand master of the Talmud, Shimon Bar Yashai who died more than 400 years ago. The building dates back to 586BC, but most of the present building was built in the 20th century. The interior is amazing and spectacular with blue tile work and wooden furniture. Some Jewish people say that this Synagogue contains then oldest Jewish holy book of Torahs in the world.
