Chemtou

Close to the Algerian border, located 20 km from the city of Jendouba, lies the ancient city of Chemtou. The site of the Numidian, and later Roman city sprawls over a wide area of low hills that was the source of an unusual, pink, orange, red marble. This stone was prized throughout the roman empire. Drink water was transported by an aqueduct from a spring located in the hills about 30km to the north, and there are still some remains of the aqueduct crossing the landscape. The sight houses also an amazing interesting archaeological museum where is exhibit how they transported the marble from here to throughout the roman empire. Also a fine mosaic floor representing the four seasons.
